MUBENDE, Uganda — Two people were killed and four children injured after a heavy truck overturned onto an oncoming car on the Mubende-Mityana road in central Uganda, police said.
The crash happened at about 8:25pm on Friday in Kagavu, Kalonga Sub-county, Mubende District, when an Actros truck travelling from Mubende towards Mityana reportedly lost control while descending a slope.
“The truck lost control while descending the slope and moved into the opposite lane, where it fell onto an oncoming Nissan Murano,” said Lameck Kigozi, Wamala Region police spokesman.
The four injured children were identified as Johana Bala, 11, Isabella Rebecca, 5, Gabriella Kawini, 12, and Dorothy, 12.
One of the people killed was identified as 45-year-old Kaijuka Kenneth. The second deceased man had not been identified by police.
The trailer came to rest on top of the Nissan Murano, trapping the occupants inside. Police officers from Mubende responded to the scene and, with the help of a crane, lifted the trailer to gain access to the wreckage.
The injured children were taken to Mubende Hospital in a police ambulance, while the bodies of the two deceased were transported to the hospital mortuary.
Police said the wreckage was being cleared from the road as investigations continued.
Kigozi said the crash was suspected to have been caused by careless driving by the truck driver.
“Inquiries into the accident are still ongoing,” he said.
