Ugandan police have rescued 48 dogs and arrested three suspects following an intelligence-led operation targeting alleged animal cruelty in Mityana District, authorities said.
The operation, conducted on June 12 in the areas of Kansuleti, Kasimbi and Bamunanika in Busimbi Division, followed growing concern from residents over the conditions in which large numbers of dogs were being kept. According to police, the facilities had attracted public attention amid reports that the animals were being subjected to mistreatment and neglect.
Officers who raided the premises found several dogs bearing signs of deliberate injury, including broken limbs and severed tails. Many of the animals also appeared severely malnourished, raising concerns about their welfare and the conditions under which they had been housed.
Police said the dogs had no documented vaccination records, a situation authorities described as a potential public health risk should any of the animals escape or come into contact with members of the community.
Following the rescue, all 48 dogs were transferred to Animal Lifeline Uganda, a registered non-governmental organisation operating a holding facility in Kateete Cell, Kireku Ward, Busimbi Division. The organisation’s directors pledged to work closely with the district veterinary authorities to ensure the animals receive vaccinations, medical treatment and proper care.
Officials said measures would also be taken to control breeding among the rescued dogs before the organisation opens an adoption programme to allow members of the public to provide them with permanent homes.
The three suspects remain in custody and are expected to be arraigned before court on charges related to animal cruelty. Additional charges may be preferred upon guidance from the Resident State Attorney.
Police have urged individuals interested in caring for stray animals to comply with all legal and regulatory requirements governing animal welfare operations, stressing that good intentions must be matched by proper standards of care and accountability.
“We advise all genuine animal lovers who wish to engage in activities involving the care of stray animals to follow the requisite legal procedures before undertaking such ventures within our communities,” police said in a statement.
