KAMPALA,Uganda – The Uganda Social Educational Welfare Association (UGASEWA) hosted a prominent iftar charity event at Mukwano Mall in Kampala, providing food and essential support to orphans, mosques, schools, and less fortunate members of the Muslim community.

Mr. Saleem Meerasa, the President and Chairman Ugasewa, while handing over the donation to community

The event, part of UGASEWA’s long-standing tradition of compassion and generosity during Ramadan, saw the distribution of iftar meals and food items to beneficiaries across various orphanages, Islamic schools, and religious centers. “We have been doing this since 1996,” said Mohammad Younus, co-founder and key organizer of UGASEWA. “We have 200 members in UGASEWA who continue contributing to the cause, along with partners like the Mandela Group, Mukwano Mall, and others.”

UGASEWA’s efforts are not limited to Uganda, as Mohammad Kaka, another founder of the organization, highlighted. “We do this here in Uganda and in India. We have been helping people by supporting over 9,200 orphans in many districts, as well as paying school fees,” he stated. This year’s Ramadan distribution saw foodstuffs worth 140 million shillings distributed to beneficiaries, thanks to the support of sponsors who are also giving back to the public as part of their corporate social responsibility (CSR).

“We have distributed foodstuffs worth 140 million shillings with the help of our sponsors,” said Mr. Saleem Meerasa, the President and Chairman Ugasewa. “I call upon other people and organizations to join us in providing support because, as UGASEWA, we keep receiving calls from many people asking for help—such as school fees, food, shoes, and more.”Beneficiaries expressed deep gratitude for the consistent support. “I’m very grateful for this brotherhood initiative by Indians who have supported schools and orphanages during Ramadan,” said Walid Abubaker from Walid Islamic Junior School and Quran Center.

Mr. Yakub Kayongo Nsereko, Executive Director of Orphans and Widows of AIDS Uganda, which receives annual assistance during Ramadan, also expressed heartfelt thanks. “I take this opportunity to thank UGASEWA and pray that they continue with this support,” he said. The event at Mukwano Mall served as a powerful reminder of community solidarity during Ramadan, with UGASEWA’s long-standing efforts—spanning medical aid, education, and welfare—continuing to uplift vulnerable groups in Uganda and beyond.

Organizers reiterated UGASEWA’s call for broader participation to meet the growing needs of those facing hardship, encouraging the public to join in helping those in need.

The organization has been supported by several sponsors, including the Rupaleria Group, Mukwano Group of Companies, Gateway Group of Companies, and Mandela Group of Companies, among others.
