The Uganda Police Force has launched investigations and made multiple arrests following a series of violent clashes linked to the ongoing NRM party primaries.
According to a police statement issued today, the disturbances, reported in Mubende, Isingiro, and Rubanda districts, involved armed confrontations, destruction of property, and attacks on political supporters.
On July 7, 2025, a violent confrontation broke out at Kyapa Kyeturege Trading Centre in Mubende District between two NRM parliamentary candidates, Henry Muhumuza and David Kabanda, —and their respective supporters. Both groups, returning from separate campaign trails, clashed in a dramatic escalation that involved gunfire and physical assault.
One individual, identified as Gumisiriza Roger, sustained gunshot wounds, while others were injured by sticks and stones.
Later, at Nabingola Sub County headquarters, chaos intensified as two vehicles (UBP 452K and UBP 788T) and a motorcycle (UFU 345X) were torched.
Mubende Central Police Station responded swiftly, dispersing the crowd and arresting three suspects. The injured were taken to Mubende Regional Hospital.
Just two days earlier, on July 5, violence erupted in Kyempisi Cell, Kikagate Subcounty, Isingiro District.
In another politically charged incident, two motorcycles and a vehicle were deliberately set ablaze. Ten suspects have been arrested, while others are reportedly in hiding.
On July 3, chaos unfolded in Rubanda District at Hakashanje Playground as stones were thrown at the convoy of Henry Musasizi shortly after he had addressed supporters.
His vehicle sustained damage, and earlier in the day, his campaign posters were allegedly vandalized.
Two suspects were apprehended by local police in connection to the attacks.
In total, 16 individuals have been arrested across the three districts, with investigations still ongoing. Some suspects have fled their homes to evade capture.
Police say a security meeting was convened on July 7 with all NRM candidates and electoral officials to urge restraint and promote peaceful campaigning.
“We condemn all forms of electoral violence and are committed to bringing perpetrators to justice,” the police statement read.
The Uganda Police Force continues to call for calm and cooperation from the public as the NRM primaries proceed.
