KAMPALA, Uganda : Women pursuing careers in Uganda’s expanding digital economy are set to benefit from mentorship, networking, and career guidance through a new initiative designed to strengthen their participation in the technology sector.
The inaugural Women in Digital event, organised by Uganda Digital Society, will create a platform for women to connect with industry peers, access experienced mentors, and position themselves for emerging opportunities in digital careers.
The event is scheduled for Saturday, 7th March, from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM at Bight of Benin on Kyadondo Road. Organisers have confirmed that the event is free and open to all interested participants, with no tickets required or on sale.
According to Joan Generous Asaba, Vice President of the Uganda Digital Society, the initiative aims to ensure that women are not only included in Uganda’s digital transformation but are also empowered to lead it.
“As Uganda’s digital economy continues to grow, it is critical that women are not only participants but leaders, innovators, and decision-makers,” Asaba said.
Uganda’s digital sector has experienced steady growth in recent years, creating opportunities in digital marketing, software development, content creation, and online entrepreneurship.
Despite this progress, women remain underrepresented in advanced digital roles and leadership positions.
Research by the United Nations Capital Development Fund shows that while Uganda has made strides in expanding access to digital tools, structural barriers continue to limit women’s advancement in the ICT sector.
These challenges include limited access to mentorship, fewer professional networks, inadequate exposure to advanced digital skills training, and a shortage of visible female role models in technology.
Asaba said the Women in Digital event will offer practical career guidance, direct engagement with experienced professionals, and opportunities to build supportive networks that foster long-term professional growth.
“Many women have shared that they have been navigating their careers alone and are eager to find community and direction,” he added.
Organisers noted that the initiative will extend beyond the inaugural event, with plans for ongoing engagements such as training sessions and regular meetups to support women at different stages of their careers. The broader goal is to strengthen inclusion and ensure women play a central role in shaping Uganda’s evolving digital economy.
