West Buganda Bishop calls on diaspora Christians to support development in home diocese

The Bishop of West Buganda Diocese, Gaster Nsereko, has called on Christians living in Kampala and the diaspora to mobilise resources to support development initiatives in their home diocese.
Nsereko said contributions from Christians living away from the diocese could help accelerate infrastructure development while strengthening the spiritual and socio-economic wellbeing of communities in the largely rural diocese.
He made the remarks on Sunday, 23 August 2026, during his maiden pastoral visit and interaction with West Buganda Christians living in the Kampala metropolitan area.
The gathering at St John’s Chapel, Mengo Senior School, also marked the official launch of the Bishop Charity Fund, an initiative intended to mobilise financial support for infrastructure and other development projects in the diocese.
An interim think-tank committee was elected during the meeting to help identify priorities and develop responses to some of the diocese’s outstanding challenges.
The afternoon service, held under the theme “United in Faith, Serving Together,” brought together more than 100 Christians, including prominent personalities from the West Buganda region.
In his address, Bishop Nsereko gave an overview of the diocese since his consecration on 24 April 2025, outlining ongoing projects, programmes and the challenges facing the church.
He said the diocese, which covers eight administrative areas, faces significant financial pressures because much of its population depends on agriculture and is vulnerable to climate-related shocks.
The bishop said prolonged drought had negatively affected livestock and food production, worsening the economic difficulties faced by many families.
The diocese covers Masaka Rural, Masaka City, Sembabule, Rakai, Kyotera, Lwengo, Bukomansimbi and Kalungu.
Former Inspector General of Government Betty Olive Namisango Kamya, who attended the gathering, pledged her support to development efforts in the diocese.
“As a daughter of Kooki in Rakai District, I am humbled to be part of this home gathering and excited to have heard an informative presentation by my Bishop,” Kamya said.
She said she was ready to work with the newly constituted think-tank committee to support initiatives aimed at strengthening the diocese.
Meanwhile, Gaster Lule Ntake, chief executive officer of Ntake Group of Companies, urged the diocese to consider establishing a modern dairy farm as part of its long-term income-generating strategy.
He said identifying suitable land for the project could provide the diocese with a sustainable source of revenue while creating opportunities for skills development and employment.
Bishop Nsereko said partnerships with Christians in Kampala and elsewhere would be important in helping West Buganda Diocese address its development needs and improve services to communities across the region.
The Bishop Charity Fund is expected to provide a structured platform through which Christians and other well-wishers can contribute to the diocese’s development programmes.
