The World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) Uganda has launched its Strategic Plan for 2025–2030, which sets out a clear roadmap to improve nature conservation, strengthen community resilience, and promote sustainable development across the country.
The new plan builds on WWF’s past work in areas such as freshwater, forests, climate, and energy, and aligns with Uganda’s National Development Plan IV (NDP IV).
Aligned with Uganda’s Development Goals
Speaking at the launch, Ivan Tumuhimbise, WWF Uganda Country Director, said the new strategy supports both WWF’s global vision and Uganda’s national development priorities.
“The strategy is built on WWF’s mission and focuses on addressing the current state and trends of Uganda’s biodiversity,” he said. “It complements the National Development Plan IV, which aims to increase household incomes and promote sustainable economic growth.”
EU Reaffirms Support
The launch event, held at Protea Hotel, was officiated by European Union Ambassador to Uganda, Jan Sadek, who confirmed the EU’s continued partnership with WWF Uganda and the Government of Uganda.
“The EU is proud to stand with WWF Uganda and the Government of Uganda in promoting conservation models that put communities at the center,” Ambassador Sadek said. “The new strategy shows a strong commitment to protecting nature while empowering people. It fits well with the EU’s goals for green growth and climate action.”
He also emphasized the importance of protecting forests, promoting sustainable land use, and expanding green energy to fight climate change. Sadek added that Uganda must find a balance between development and conservation to protect its natural heritage.
Key Goals of the Plan
The five-year plan sets several ambitious targets, including; Protecting 300,000 hectares of High Conservation Value forests both inside and outside protected areas, Stabilizing or increasing populations of key wildlife species in important landscapes, Reducing carbon emissions by 1.1 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent, Improving the health of freshwater ecosystems, Building resilience of communities and ecosystems against climate change, and enhancing livelihoods and socio-economic well-being in targeted communities.
The plan also includes regional and cross-border programs led by WWF Uganda to support high-impact conservation efforts across East Africa.
A Call for Partnership
WWF Uganda is calling on government agencies, the private sector, civil society, and communities to work together to achieve the vision of people living in harmony with nature.
The WWF Uganda Strategic Plan 2025–2030 reaffirms the organization’s commitment to protecting biodiversity while supporting Uganda’s sustainable development and climate goals.
