Kira Town, Wakiso District – In a move to fight youth unemployment and empower her community, young business entrepreneur Flavia Kanyange has announced her ambitious plans to establish a fashion and design school that will train young people in practical, income-generating skills.

Flavia Kanyange, a passionate fashion designer and trained social worker in her 20s, hails from Mbiko Village, Buikwe District. Her journey into fashion began during her university years when she juggled academic studies with fashion training in Kampala. “Fashion was always on my heart,” she said in an exclusive interview with ugnewsline.com. “Before I even graduated, I had already acquired practical skills in fashion design.”

What started as a small project at home between 2021 and 2022, soon blossomed into a full-fledged business. In 2023, Kanyange officially opened up Kanyange Fashions along Mamerito Road in Kira Town, Wakiso District. The business quickly attracted not only clients but also aspiring fashion designers seeking training. She began informally teaching students, helping them develop skills and confidence in the craft.

Inspired by this demand and driven by a desire to create sustainable change, Kanyange now plans to open a state-of-the-art fashion school within the next few years. “My dream is to equip as many young people as possible with hands-on skills that can help them create their own jobs,” she said. “This school will not only reduce unemployment but also foster a generation of skilled, self-reliant entrepreneurs.”

Challenges and the Call for Support

While her vision is clear, Kanyange acknowledges the challenges ahead, particularly limited funding and equipment. “I have many young people who come to me asking to learn, but I can’t support all of them due to lack of machines and training space,” she noted. “With support from well-wishers, the government, or the private sector, we can make this school a reality.”

Kanyange’s customers

She is calling on individuals, development partners, and the international community to partner with her in this transformative project. “Supporting young people with practical skills is one of the surest ways to empower communities and grow the economy,” Kanyange emphasized.

A Message to Fellow Youth

To fellow youth, Kanyange offers encouragement: “Don’t be ashamed of your passion. Go for what you love and do it with consistency and quality. When you’re passionate and understand your customers, your business will grow.”

She also urges young entrepreneurs to learn key business fundamentals, including the importance of knowing your profits, capital, and customer needs. “These are crucial elements in sustaining a successful business,” she said.
