Schools across Uganda begin the third term today, September 14, 2026, with parents and guardians making final preparations to ensure learners return to school with all the required scholastic materials, including properly fitting uniforms, sweaters and other clothing items.

As families prepare for the new term, experts in the sewing and fashion design sector are highlighting the range of services available to schools, parents and students to improve the quality, appearance and durability of school uniforms.

Among the services offered by fashion designers and tailors is the personalisation of school uniforms and sweaters by putting students’ names on their clothing. The service is aimed at helping learners easily identify their uniforms and reducing cases of clothing being misplaced or exchanged at school.

Ms. Flavia Kanyange, founder and Chief Executive Officer of Kanyange Fashions, is among the fashion and design experts providing such services to parents and schools.

Kanyange said fashion and tailoring businesses can play an important role in helping parents prepare their children for school by offering a variety of services beyond simply making new uniforms.

She explained that parents can seek professional assistance for making, repairing, adjusting and personalising school uniforms, sweaters and other garments to meet the specific requirements of individual schools.

The services can also be useful to parents whose children have outgrown their uniforms during the previous term, as garments can be adjusted or remade to ensure that learners return to school in properly fitting clothing.

Putting names on uniforms and sweaters is particularly important in schools where many learners wear similar clothing. Clearly identifying garments can make it easier for students, teachers and school staff to distinguish individual items.

Fashion and design experts also encourage parents to consider the quality of materials and workmanship when purchasing or making school uniforms, noting that durable clothing can withstand frequent washing and everyday use throughout the school term.

With the third term often involving a busy academic schedule, parents are encouraged to ensure that their children have adequate and well-maintained uniforms before reporting to school.

Kanyange Fashions is among the businesses offering sewing and fashion design services to meet the needs of families and learners as schools reopen.

The sector also provides opportunities for young people and other entrepreneurs interested in tailoring, garment production and fashion design, while helping families access customised clothing services within their communities.

As schools reopen for the third term, fashion and sewing professionals say parents can make use of available services to repair, adjust, personalise or make new uniforms, ensuring that learners report to school prepared and appropriately dressed.
