Pakwach, West Nile – The NRM Presidential Candidate, General Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, has promised to support better management of fishing activities in Pakwach District by creating an elders’ committee. This committee will help decide who should be responsible for fishing and ensure people follow the right fishing rules.

General Museveni said this during his first campaign rally in the West Nile sub-region, held at Omach Primary School playgrounds in Pakwach District.

The President made this promise after hearing reports from local leaders who are asking for changes in how fishing is done on lakes and rivers in the area. He reminded the people living near water bodies that using bad fishing nets and poor fishing practices has caused a decrease in mature fish in the lakes.

“Fishing is a valuable activity,” Museveni said. “But the question is, who should do this fishing? We must do it in the right way and protect our resources.”

He added that he plans to talk with local communities to find an agreement on how fishing should be managed, especially among indigenous groups in the district.

Museveni Calls for Peace and Unity

At the same rally, President Museveni asked the people of Pakwach to be ambassadors of peace. He reminded them how the past wars had forced many people to run into exile until the NRM government restored peace and allowed them to return home.

“You know what war does,” he said. “But now, because of peace, you came back home. Let’s protect that peace.”

He urged the people to support the NRM so the government can continue its work of building roads, schools, health centers, and helping people create wealth.

NRM’s History in Uganda

President Museveni also spoke about the history of the NRM and its long journey in Uganda’s politics. He said that the early political parties were divided by tribe and religion and did not focus on including women or the youth. That is why, he explained, the NRM was formed.

“I started in politics in 1960 when I was a young man,” he said. “Later in 1971, we formed a group called FRONASA that fought for what was right. The NRM has always supported what is right and rejected what is wrong.”

Solving Land Disputes and Supporting Development

President Museveni also promised to form a special committee to investigate the ongoing land conflict in Pakwach between the Jolam (Alur) and Acholi communities. He said the government will help find a peaceful solution.

He also praised the development progress in the West Nile region, saying that the NRM government has opened up the area through roads and social services, making it easier for people to do business and live better lives.

In his final message, Museveni told voters in Pakwach to protect the achievements brought by the NRM by re-electing the party to continue its work.

“West Nile is developing because of peace and good leadership,” he said. “Let us keep it that way.”
