MUBENDE, Uganda : Police in Mubende District have launched a manhunt for armed robbers who attacked and robbed a mobile money and banking agent in Kasambya Town Council on Tuesday night.
The victim, Vincent Taremwa, 44, a resident of Kasambya B Ward and a mobile money operator, survived the violent attack after being ambushed by two unidentified men riding on a motorcycle at around 7:40pm.
According to police, the assailants intercepted Taremwa near the junction leading to BRAC Bank in Kasambya as he was heading home and ordered him to surrender his bag. During the struggle, the attackers reportedly slashed his left palm with a knife, but he continued resisting.
The robbers allegedly fired gunshots into the air to overpower him before fleeing with the bag containing two banking agent machines belonging to Centenary Bank and DTB, two mobile phones used for agent transactions, and about Shs9 million in cash.
Taremwa later reported the incident at Kasambya Police Station before seeking medical treatment at a nearby clinic.
Detectives visited and documented the scene, where a cartridge was recovered, confirming that the suspects were armed with an AK-47 rifle. Witness statements have also been recorded as investigations continue.
Wamala Region Police spokesperson Lameck Kigozi said efforts to trace and arrest the attackers are ongoing.
Police have urged mobile money operators and banking agents to remain vigilant and strengthen their personal security, warning that criminals often target them because they are believed to handle large amounts of cash.
