A total of 115 sheikhs and sheikhas have graduated from Bilal Islamic Secondary School in Bwaise, qualifying to serve as mosque imams with a mandate to preach and guide Muslim faithful on moral uprightness in society.
The chief guest at the 15th Thanawi (S6 Islamic Education) graduation ceremony, held on August 8, 2026, Senior Counsel Hajji Usaamah Ssebuufu, a member of the Special Legal Team at State House, congratulated the graduates and encouraged them to preach factual content enshrined in the Holy Quran.
He urged the graduates, as they enter the workplace, to remember that they are expected to be leaders of integrity, transparency and truthfulness. He also encouraged them to ensure that their conduct and work inspire others to serve humanity through the application of both faith and hard work, which he described as important principles for contributing to the national development agenda.
Ssebuufu commended the late Hajji Musa Kasule and his family of Wandegeya for donating the land in Bwaise on which the institution was established. He said the gesture had enabled the school to contribute to the training of Muslim scholars and imams, ultimately supporting the academic and religious development of its students.
The institute’s principal, Sheikh Muhammad Muhamood Kamoga, thanked the Chairperson of the Board of Trustees, Sheikh Abdul Obeid Kamulegeya, and his team for providing technical and logistical support that has contributed to the expansion of the school’s infrastructure.
He also thanked all stakeholders for standing with the institution through its numerous challenges and achievements, saying their dedicated support had greatly contributed to the school’s current development agenda.
Kamoga noted that the institution initially focused on training young religious leaders but later realised the need to introduce vocational skills training programmes to equip students with practical skills and position them to become self-reliant and job-creating individuals in the future.
The head of the Directorate of Industrial Training (DIT) at Bilal Schools, Sheikh Ntale Rashid, applauded the leadership for providing the opportunity to offer vocational training. However, he said the institution’s major challenge was limited operational space and inadequate technical equipment, which he said was hampering the implementation of its training programmes.
The Kawempe Division Mayor, Dr. Emmanuel Sserunjogi, appreciated the work being done by the Bilal Schools leadership, saying the institution had positively transformed communities around Bwaise.
He pledged that, working together with the division’s political and technical leadership, they would continue supporting the objectives of Bilal Schools.
Outstanding students rewarded
Mubiru Ibrahim and Ashaba Sumayyah were awarded brand-new laptop computers and a cash prize of Shs1 million each, courtesy of SondeStones Hardware, for their outstanding performance.
The chief guest, Senior Counsel Ssebuufu, also announced direct sponsorship for the two students through Tawakkal Travels Ltd to begin the process of sending them to the Muslim holy city of Mecca, Saudi Arabia, to perform Hajj.
Other students recognised for their achievements included Zimula Abdul Rashid and Zahara Nalwanga, who were awarded for being the best-disciplined students, among other graduates who received prestigious gifts in recognition of their hard work.
