The Chief of Defence Forces and Senior Presidential Advisor for Special Operations, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has announced a reshuffle of senior Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) commanders, with several General Officers transferred and appointed to new positions.
The changes, announced Saturday by the Ministry of Defence and Veteran Affairs, take immediate effect.
Maj. Gen. Joseph Ssemwanga has been transferred from his position as Deputy Commander of the Land Forces and appointed General Officer Commanding the Reserve Forces.
Ssemwanga replaces Lt. Gen. Charles Otema Awany, who is due to retire next week.
In another change, Maj. Gen. Felix Busizoori, the Commander of the 4 Infantry Division, has been appointed Deputy Commander of the Land Forces.
Maj. Gen. Wilberforce Sserunkuma, who has been commanding the 3 Infantry Division, will take over as Commander of the 4 Infantry Division.
Brig. Gen. Michael Hyeroba, formerly Deputy Commander of the 1 Infantry Division, has been appointed Commander of the 3 Infantry Division.
The latest changes come as the UPDF continues to adjust its senior command structure and strengthen leadership across its formations.
In a statement issued on Saturday, Col. Chris Magezi, Acting Director of Defence Public Information at the Ministry of Defence and Veteran Affairs, congratulated the General Officers upon their new appointments and wished them success in their respective assignments.
“The transfers and appointments take immediate effect,” Magezi said.
The reshuffle affects key positions within the Land Forces and the UPDF’s Reserve Forces, placing experienced commanders in new leadership roles.
The appointments are part of the routine changes in the military command structure aimed at ensuring effective leadership and operational readiness across the force.
The UPDF has continued to reorganise and strengthen its command structures in response to Uganda’s domestic and regional security responsibilities.
