KAMPALA, Uganda- A group of fathers from Uganda’s commercial boda boda (motorcycle taxi) community has pledged to take action against sexual abuse of young girls.
Often criticized for engaging in relationships with underage girls, contributing to school dropouts, and promoting single motherhood, some members of the boda boda industry are now committing to change that narrative.
The commitment was made during a Father’s Day event held in Busega, a suburb of Kampala, and organized by Fathers Arise, an advocacy organization focused on empowering men and the boy child.

Mr. Blasio Konde, who led a team of boda boda riders and stage leaders, vowed to raise awareness among his colleagues about the importance of protecting young girls and married women from exploitation. He called on riders to be role models and responsible fathers in their communities.
“It’s very unfortunate that some of our riders engage in sexual relationships with the young girls they transport—girls who are often the same age as their own daughters. I feel proud when I transport a child from nursery to university, knowing I’ve played a positive role in their life,” Mr. Konde said.

Pastor Isaac Mukisa, Executive Director of Fathers Arise, emphasized the importance of honoring hardworking men in the boda boda industry who endure daily challenges to support their families.
The event also featured participation from The Remnant Generation, High Sound for Children Uganda, and Raising Teenagers Uganda, all of which are members of the Coalition on Ending Sexual Violence.
International Father’s Day, celebrated on the third Sunday of June, recognizes the vital role fathers play in their families and communities.
