Buikwe District was rocked by a fatal accident on the morning of April 9, 2026, when a brake failure triggered a catastrophic chain-reaction crash at Kinoni along the Jinja-Kampala highway. The incident, reported around 7:40am, involved three vehicles and left multiple passengers dead.
According to Mabira traffic police, the disaster began when a white Isuzu ELF, registration UA050BZ, driven by 30-year-old Mpandi Paul from Namawojjolo, Mukono District, lost control while descending a straight slope from Kampala.
The vehicle veered into the opposite lane, colliding head-on with a white Toyota Hiace (UBQ729D). The driver of the Hiace died instantly at the scene.
The Isuzu then barreled forward, crashing into the rear of another Toyota Hiace PSV (UBR511N), driven by 43-year-old Swaibu Kasoma from Kireka, Wakiso District, pushing it into a roadside trench before overturning.
Tragically, all seven passengers aboard the Hiace UBQ729D, including young Shivan Kyomugisha, 19, of Kilyowa, Buikwe District, and adults from Kampala, Entebbe, Busia, and Jinja, were either killed or critically injured.
Two unidentified bodies are currently at Kawolo Hospital mortuary pending postmortem.
The surviving victims have been admitted to Kawolo Hospital for treatment.
Authorities have taken Paul Mpandi into custody as investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding the brake failure that sparked the devastating crash.
The police spokesperson for Ssezibwa region, Hellen Butoto, confirmed ongoing inquiries, emphasizing road safety as authorities urge drivers to remain vigilant on major highways.
