The Cabinet has approved the 2026/2027 budget framework paper, extending key local government terms and introducing judicial reforms aimed at improving efficiency and accountability, the Minister of State for National Guidance, Godfrey Baluku Kiime, announced.
The theme of the 2026/27 budget focuses on the “full monetization of Uganda’s economy” through commercial agriculture, industrialization, expanded services, digital transformation, and improved market access.
As part of government interventions, a restocking program for Acholi, Lango, and Teso sub-regions was approved, with Shs.80 billion allocated this year to support livestock and agricultural development.
In line with the Constitution and the Local Government Act, Cabinet extended the term of office of Local Council I and II members, as well as Women Councils, for up to 180 days. This extension follows the previous extension that expired on 30th December 2025, and the new term will run from 31st December 2025.
Cabinet also approved the Magistrate’s Courts (Amendment) Bill 2025, aimed at strengthening Uganda’s justice system. Expected outcomes include: enhancing efficiency and effectiveness in courts; strengthening judicial administration and accountability by aligning legal frameworks with the current judicial structure and empowering the Chief Justice to manage magisterial areas and case transfers; and Promoting timely, fair, and affordable justice delivery, restoring public confidence in the courts, and supporting Sustainable Development Goal 16 on Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions, as well as NDP IV and Vision 2040 objectives.
The Ministry of ICT and National Guidance will oversee implementation, signalling a commitment to both economic growth and institutional strengthening in the coming fiscal year.
