ENTEBBE — The Chief of Defence Forces and Senior Presidential Advisor for Special Operations, Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has held high-level discussions with the leadership of Nation Media Group (NMG) Uganda over the continued suspension of its media operations, including NTV Uganda and Daily Monitor.
The meeting took place at the Special Forces Command headquarters in Entebbe and brought together senior representatives from both sides, including NMG owner Mr. Rostam Aziz, his son Mr. Saam Aziz, and Ms. Georgia Mutagaywa, Chief of Staff of Taarifa Limited, the parent company associated with NMG’s Uganda operations.
According to sources familiar with the discussions, the engagement focused on the ongoing closure of NMG outlets in Uganda, a situation that has raised concern within media and diplomatic circles over press freedom, regulatory compliance, and operational licensing.
The closures, which affect some of Uganda’s most widely read and watched news platforms, have revived public debate about the broadcaster’s long-standing tensions with state authorities. Over the years, NMG Uganda has periodically faced restrictions and regulatory disputes, most notably involving allegations tied to compliance issues and editorial disagreements with government institutions.
In earlier years, similar shutdowns of NMG outlets sparked political controversy and public dabate positioning the media group at the center of broader conversations about media independence in Uganda.
While the meeting in Entebbe marks a rare direct engagement between the military leadership and NMG executives, there has so far been no official public statement clarifying whether the closures will be reversed or extended, leaving uncertainty over the government’s final position.
Observers say the outcome of the discussions could be key in determining whether NMG restores full operations in Uganda or continues under partial or restricted conditions, as stakeholders await further official communication.
