FEATURE NEWS-ARTICLE: Women’s leadership in business especially within small and medium enterprises (SMEs) is no longer just an untapped opportunity; it is being actively transformed through targeted initiatives like the GROW Project, which is redefining how women lead, scale, and succeed in business.

Transforming Women’s Leadership in SMEs

At the center of this shift is the GROW Project, a catalytic initiative designed to unlock the full potential of women entrepreneurs by addressing the exact barriers that have historically limited their leadership. Rather than focusing only on participation, GROW is strengthening women’s authority, decision-making power, and long-term business growth.

Through improved access to finance, tailored training, and structured mentorship, the project is not just supporting women to start businesses—it is enabling them to lead competitively, expand sustainably, and influence markets.

Why women’s leadership in SMEs matters

SMEs remain the backbone of most economies, and when women lead them effectively, the impact extends far beyond business performance. Women’s leadership drives inclusive economic growth because women tend to reinvest more into families and communities, strengthening education, health, and stability. It also fuels job creation, as women-led enterprises often hire more women, broadening workforce participation. In addition, diverse leadership improves innovation and resilience, leading to better decision-making.

Institutions like World Bank and International Finance Corporation have consistently shown that closing gender gaps in entrepreneurship could significantly boost economic growth, making initiatives like GROW not just social programs, but economic imperatives.

What makes GROW different

While many programs acknowledge the challenges women face, GROW directly tackles them in practical, scalable ways. It improves access to finance by helping women overcome collateral and credit barriers that often block growth. It strengthens leadership development so women gain skills not just to manage businesses, but to lead strategically. It expands networks by connecting women to markets, mentors, and opportunities traditionally out of reach. It also builds confidence and visibility, strengthening women’s presence in spaces where leadership has long been male-dominated.

This integrated approach is what positions GROW as a transformational force, not just a support mechanism.

Strengths women bring—now amplified

Research in fields like Organizational Behavior and Entrepreneurship highlights strengths women already bring to leadership, including collaboration, financial discipline, and customer focus. The GROW Project amplifies these strengths, turning them into competitive advantages that drive business success.

Breaking long-standing barriers

Women entrepreneurs still face persistent obstacles, including limited access to capital, restricted business networks, time constraints due to unpaid care work, and cultural norms that undermine authority. The GROW Project directly intervenes in these areas, helping shift women from constrained participants to empowered leaders.

Organizations such as UN Women have long advocated for similar structural changes, but GROW operationalizes these ideas at scale, turning policy goals into real-world outcomes.

Practical impact on women-led businesses

Women participating in initiatives like GROW are seeing tangible improvements. They are building stronger financial systems and gaining credibility with lenders. They are accessing wider markets and procurement opportunities, while increasingly using digital tools to scale operations. They are also expanding peer and mentorship networks that support long-term growth. Most importantly, they are gaining the confidence and positioning needed to lead visibly and decisively.

The bigger picture

Women’s leadership in SMEs is not just about fairness, it is a growth strategy. The GROW Project demonstrates that when structural barriers are removed and leadership is intentionally developed, women do not just participate in the economy—they transform it.

By enabling women to start, sustain, and scale businesses on equal footing, GROW is reshaping the business landscape, creating stronger enterprises, more inclusive economies, and lasting community impact.
