A senior journalist and founder of the African Integrated Think Tank (AfITT), Muramira Gashegu, has been honored with the prestigious 2024 COMESA Media Award for his outstanding contributions to African regional affairs journalism.

The award was presented by Kenyan President William Ruto during the 24th COMESA Summit held in Nairobi.
The Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA), Africa’s largest regional economic bloc comprising 21 member states, recognized Gashegu for his insightful and impactful coverage of regional integration and development initiatives.
In a statement issued by Mwangi Gakunga, Head of Communications at COMESA, on behalf of Secretary-General Chileshe Mpundu Kapwepwe, Gashegu’s article was commended for its depth, clarity, and role in enhancing public understanding of COMESA’s regional integration agenda.
“Gashegu’s work is relevant, informative, and effectively communicates the benefits and progress of regional cooperation,” the statement read. It added that his reporting has inspired greater awareness and support among stakeholders and citizens for COMESA’s development goals.
Expressing gratitude, Gashegu reaffirmed his commitment to journalism that fosters positive societal change. “Writing is my profession and passion, and I strive to contribute meaningfully to Africa’s development. I encourage fellow journalists to focus on stories that advance the continent’s growth,” he said.
Gashegu’s extensive career spans business and regional affairs journalism, with contributions to prominent outlets including The Arusha News, The East African News Agency (Tanzania), and The New Times (Rwanda). Last month, he launched the African Integration News Agency (AfINA), a platform dedicated to comprehensive coverage of Africa’s integration efforts.
A respected figure in the regional media landscape, Gashegu also serves as a member of the COMESA Business Reporters Forum (COMBREF) and was named an East African Community Youth Ambassador in 2012 for his role in promoting regional integration among youth.
