Police in Rubanda District are investigating a fire incident in which a man lost his house and household property worth millions of shillings after a cigarette allegedly sparked a fire.
The incident occurred on September 22, 2026, at Rwamugura Village, Kakore Parish, Hamurwa Sub-county in Rubanda District.
The man has been identified as Kyompeire Peter, who is reportedly separated from his wife, Twinomuhwezi Agnes, and has been living separately for about three years.
According to police, Kyompeire returned to his house while under the influence of alcohol and started smoking. It is alleged that a burning cigarette butt fell onto dry materials, causing a fire that gutted the entire house and destroyed the property inside.
SP PRO, Kigezi Region said that the fire destroyed household property worth millions of shillings, including beddings, clothes and foodstuffs.
No death or injury was reported. He said Kyompeire fled the scene after realising that the house had caught fire.
He cautioned members of the public against careless smoking inside houses, especially those containing dry materials and highly flammable substances, to prevent similar incidents.
