BUKEDEA: President Yoweri Museveni has mourned the passing of Mzee Benjamin Ocheger, describing him as a man who lived an active life of service and discipline.
“It was with sadness that I received news of the death of your dear father, Mzee Benjamin Ocheger. On behalf of the Government, the NRM Party, and on my own behalf, I convey my heartfelt sympathies to Ambassador Nelson Ocheger and the entire family for the loss of your father and grandfather,” President Museveni said.
In his condolence message delivered by the Vice President, Maj. (Rtd) Dr. Jessica Alupo, the President said that although he did not personally know Mzee Benjamin Ocheger, his interaction with Ambassador Nelson Ocheger in 2016 revealed that Mzee Ocheger had led an active life. He had worked with Soroti Local Government and Jinja Municipal Council.
President Museveni emphasized that even after his retirement in 1978, Mzee Ocheger remained productive through agricultural activities, supported by his wife, Maama Janet Angura. “He was able to raise a wonderful family and instill discipline in his children. I am glad that his children have followed his example and are contributing to national development and growth,” Museveni said.
The President prayed for God to grant the family strength and comfort during this difficult time. “Your father has left behind a good legacy, which you should protect and build upon,” he added while eulogising Mzee Ocheger during his burial in Malera Sub-county, Bukedea District.
In her own tribute, Vice President Jessica Alupo emphasized the importance of honoring elders who dedicated their lives to public service and community development.
She was accompanied by several senior government and NRM officials, including Mr. David Calvin Echodu, NRM Eastern Regional Vice Chairperson; Dr. Kenneth Omona, State Minister for Northern Uganda; and Hon. Susan Amero, Woman Member of Parliament for Amuria District, among other dignitaries.
Several mourners, including relatives of the deceased, described Mzee Ocheger as a man who loved all people and served as an advisor to many.
Ambassador Nelson Ocheger thanked President Museveni for keeping in touch with the family and for the support extended to them.
