KAMPALA, Uganda — A new chapter has officially begun for Uganda’s banking landscape as the Bank of Uganda (BoU) granted an operating license to Pearl Bank Uganda Limited, marking the institution’s graceful transition from its well-known identity, PostBank Uganda.
The moment was sealed in a warm ceremony where the BoU Governor, Dr. Michael Atingi-Ego, handed over the license to Pearl Bank’s Managing Director, Mr. Julius Kakeeto, a symbolic milestone that beautifully captures the bank’s evolution and renewed promise to Ugandans.
This approval is the latest stride in a journey that began with the Bank’s five-year transformation strategy and its elevation to a Tier 1 Commercial Bank in 2021. For Pearl Bank, the new name reflects not just a rebrand, but a deeper commitment to growth, innovation, and national pride drawing inspiration from Uganda’s cherished title as the Pearl of Africa.
Dr. Atingi-Ego praised the Bank for its progressiveness, especially highlighting the impact of Wendi, Pearl Bank’s mobile wallet that has opened doors to financial services for countless Ugandans. “The bank has done great things in supporting financial inclusion,” he noted, recognizing its efforts toward widening access and strengthening digital financial empowerment.
With the new license, Pearl Bank Uganda is set to operate under the careful regulatory guidance of the Bank of Uganda ensuring security, stability, and reliable financial services for communities across the country. This oversight also supports Uganda’s broader economic development by building public trust in the banking sector.
At the heart of this rebrand lies a purposeful strategy: boosting the profitability of a government-owned institution while uplifting communities. The bank aims to champion sustainable financial inclusion, entrepreneurship, and SME growth especially for businesses adding value within the agricultural sector.
Pearl Bank’s roots stretch deep into Uganda’s history. Beginning as the Post Office Savings Department in 1926, evolving into PostBank in 1998, and undergoing remarkable reforms under Mr. Kakeeto since 2019, the institution has continually reinvented itself. From expanded branch networks to digital transformation and strengthened agency banking, the bank has consistently grown alongside the people it serves.
The launch of the Wendi mobile wallet in 2023 stands out as one of its proudest achievements bringing saving, sending money, paying utilities, and cross-border transfers right into the hands of ordinary Ugandans and empowering SACCOs nationwide.
The accolades have followed too. In 2025, the Bank of Uganda named it Overall Best Performing Bank under the Small Business Recovery Fund and Agricultural Credit Facility, and the European Organisation for Sustainable Development recognized it for its commitment to sustainability.
The rebrand, officially announced in June 2025, now comes to life with the operational license in hand. Guided by the uplifting tagline Grow. Prosper., Pearl Bank Uganda steps confidently into its future ready to spark brighter opportunities and build prosperity for Ugandans from all walks of life.
