The Kampala Metropolitan Police has raised concerns over increasing traffic violations linked to political activities, following disruptions caused by a convoy returning from Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago’s nomination in Ntinda.

According to a statement by Luke Owoyesigyire, Deputy Public Relations Officer for the Kampala Metropolitan Police, the convoy, though initially peaceful, triggered a large-scale disruption on its return journey when a motorcycle fitted with a loudspeaker (registration number UBE 965R) began mobilizing supporters.
The motorcycle, which has since been impounded, led to the assembling of around 200 motorcycle riders and 20 vehicles, significantly obstructing traffic flow through key city routes.
To manage the situation, police set up a roadblock at Rubaga. However, some riders attempted to evade the checkpoint, resulting in a collision between two motorcycles. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.
The situation briefly escalated when a few individuals began pelting stones at law enforcement officers. Police managed to quickly de-escalate the tension, and the crowd dispersed without further incident.
Lord Mayor Lukwago was safely escorted to his residence, and normalcy has since been restored in the affected areas.
“We urge all political leaders and their supporters to adhere to traffic regulations and show consideration for other road users and the business community,” said Owoyesigyire.
“The Uganda Police Force remains committed to ensuring public safety during the election period and will continue to take necessary measures to prevent such disruptions,” he noted.
