A quiet Thursday night in Mbale City turned tragic after a violent road crash along the Mbale–Kumi Road claimed a life in a matter of seconds, exposing once again the deadly risks on Uganda’s highways.
The fatal accident occurred at around 10:05pm on April 23, 2026, near the busy IUIU taxi stage, an area often teeming with late night movement. What began as a routine journey for three men aboard a boda boda motorcycle quickly spiraled into catastrophe when the rider attempted a dangerous maneuver in traffic.
According to Elgon Region Police spokesperson SP Rogers Taitika, the motorcycle, carrying two male passengers, was traveling from Mbale City towards Nakaloke alongside a HOWO truck driven by 41-year-old Kidoda Hussein from Tororo District.

In a split-second decision that proved fatal, the rider tried to overtake the truck from the left side, an illegal and highly risky move.
As the motorcycle edged forward, the rider reportedly swerved abruptly in an attempt to avoid a cyclist in his path. That sudden movement sent the bike directly into the rear tyres of the heavy truck.

The impact was devastating.
One of the passengers was killed instantly at the scene, his life cut short before any help could arrive.

The second passenger survived but sustained injuries and was rushed to Mbale Regional Referral Hospital, where he is currently receiving treatment.

The identity of the deceased has not yet been officially confirmed.
Police have attributed the crash to careless overtaking by the unidentified motorcycle rider, whose own identity remains unknown as investigations continue.

Both the damaged Bajaj Boxer motorcycle and the truck have since been impounded and are parked at Mbale Central Police Station yard pending inspection.
Meanwhile, the body of the deceased has been taken to Mbale City mortuary for a postmortem examination, as authorities work to piece together the final moments leading up to the deadly collision.
