KOLOLO, Uganda:  Thousands of Ugandans gathered at Kololo Independence Grounds for a national charity run held in celebration of the 52nd birthday of the Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba.

Held under the theme “Run for Charity, Run for Hope,” this year’s event attracted participants from across the country, including political leaders, religious figures, members of the security forces, and civilians. The run aimed to raise funds and awareness in support of orphans and persons with disabilities.

The Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Rt Hon Thomas Tayebwa, presided over the event as Chief Runner and Guest of Honour. He officially flagged off the run on behalf of the CDF and delivered a message conveying appreciation to all Ugandans, organisers, and participants for supporting this year’s cause.

In the message, Gen Kainerugaba emphasized that the initiative reflects a spirit of solidarity and shared national responsibility. He commended the broad participation from different regions, noting that the run has grown into a truly national event that showcases unity and collective purpose.

He also expressed gratitude to security agencies, volunteers, and service providers for ensuring the smooth and secure conduct of the event.

Representing the Ministry of Defence and Veteran Affairs, the State Minister for Veteran Affairs, Hon Huda Oleru, highlighted the importance of the run in promoting discipline, teamwork, and resilience—values upheld by the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF). She noted that sports continue to serve as a unifying force that transcends social and cultural differences while contributing to national development.

Hon Oleru further commended the UPDF for maintaining peace and stability, which she said enables citizens to participate in development-oriented initiatives such as the charity run.

More than just a celebration, the event stood out as a symbol of generosity and hope. Funds raised will go towards supporting orphans and persons with disabilities, reflecting a commitment to uplifting vulnerable communities.

The run was attended by several senior government and military officials, including the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Hon Okello Oryem; the Minister of Security, Hon Maj Gen (Rtd) Jim Muhwezi; the State Minister for Microfinance, Hon Haruna Kasolo; the Under Secretary for Finance and Administration, Mrs Edith Buturo; the Deputy Chief of Defence Forces, Lt Gen Sam Okiding; the Commander Land Force, Lt Gen Kayanja Muhanga; and the Commander Reserve Force, Lt Gen Charles Otema.

Also in attendance were senior UPDF generals, including former Inspector General of Police Gen (Rtd) Kale Kayihura, as well as Chiefs of Staff, senior and junior officers, representatives from other security agencies, and leaders from religious, cultural, and political institutions.
