Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni has promoted more than 300 officers in the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) in a move aimed at strengthening the military’s leadership structure.
A statement issued by the UPDF said President Museveni, who is also the country’s commander-in-chief, promoted 301 general, senior and junior officers across the force.
The military also confirmed 83 officers who had been serving in acting positions in their substantive ranks, while 89 second lieutenants completed probation and were confirmed as lieutenants.
Among the most senior officers elevated were Brig Gen Godwin Karugaba, Brig Gen Chris Musinguzi Bagonza, Brig Gen Michael Nyarwa, Brig Gen Richard Karemire and Brig Gen David Robert Gonyi, all of whom were promoted to the rank of major general.
Acting Maj Gen Joseph Musoke Ssemwanga was also confirmed as a substantive major general.
The UPDF said the promotions and confirmations were intended to reinforce leadership at different levels of the armed forces and ensure continuity in carrying out its constitutional mandate of defending Uganda’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
The Ministry of Defence and Veteran Affairs and the UPDF congratulated the officers on their promotions and confirmations.
Military promotions in Uganda are periodically announced by the presidency and often form part of broader efforts to reorganise command structures and fill senior leadership positions within the armed forces.
