KASANDA, Uganda: The police are hunting for unidentified lady who allegedly stole a thre-day-old baby, at Kiganda Health Centre IV, in Kasanda district.
Reports indicate that the woman first disguised as staff of the health facility before taking the baby.
The baby to Joachim Muhindo and Ruth Nalubowa of Katosi Cell in Kiganda town council had been taken to health centre on March 12, 2026, after developing some health complications.
The baby was immediately taken in the intensive care unit where she responded positively and on March 14, 2026 she was transferred to postnatal ward pending discharge.
Police reports indicate that on March 15, 2026 an unidentified woman entered the ward disguising as a medical officer, moving around the ward checking on patients and their treatment notes.
Lameck Kigozi, the spokesperson for Wamala policing area, said when she reached the bed of the victim, she lifted her and read the treatment notes.
She allegedly told the mother that the baby’s condition was deteriorating and needed some medicine which had not yet been administered.
She is said to have given the mother Shs10,000/= to go out to the pharmacy and buy the drugs, only to return when the suspect had left with the baby.
Kigozi said a report was made at Kiganda police station and police kicked off investigations into the circumstances under which the baby disappeared.
“We appeal to anyone in Kiganda town, Kassanda district and Wamala region at large who may come across a woman with a newly born baby yet she was not known to be pregnant or expecting to inform nearby police,” he noted.
