BACK-TO-SCHOOL:  A new school year doesn’t start with the first bell, it begins long before that. In the aisles of supermarkets, at busy downtown shops, and in quiet moments at home, parents pore over long school lists, mentally calculating what can wait and what cannot.

This season begins with a blend of hope and pressure: the excitement of a fresh start for children, and the weight of responsibility for adults determined to give them the best possible start.

For students, back to school is filled with promise: new notebooks, freshly sharpened pencils, backpacks, water bottles, and the confidence that comes with a fresh beginning. For parents and guardians, however, it can feel like one of the most demanding times of the year, requiring careful budgeting, time management, and emotional resilience to balance school supplies with everyday household needs.

This year, there’s a welcome shift in the usual rush. Thanks to the Ministry of Education and Sports extending the school reporting date from February 2nd to February 10th, families have been gifted something rare during this hectic time: time. Time to plan thoughtfully, spread out expenses, and prepare without the usual stress.

Across Uganda’s retail landscape, the back-to-school season transforms shopping habits almost overnight. Families navigate a mix of outlets in downtown Kampala, neighborhood supermarkets, wholesalers, and open markets, piecing together supplies while managing tight budgets. Major players like Carrefour, Fraine, China Town, and Quality Supermarket offer a range of shopping experiences, each catering to different needs, price points, and convenience levels.

But back-to-school prep today is about more than just stationery. Parents are balancing school essentials with everyday household needs, ensuring their children are well-equipped while keeping their homes stocked for the term ahead. This includes everything from organizing notebooks, school bags, and water bottles to stocking up on bedsheets, blankets, cleaning supplies, snacks, and drinks for school, as well as groceries like rice, cooking oil, sugar, and cereals.

It is within this reality that Carrefour Supermarket Uganda’s Back to School campaign stands out. By offering discounts across a wide range of school essentials including books, pens, bags, mathematical sets, water bottles, suitcases, bedsheets, blankets, snacks, drinks, toiletries, and cleaning supplies alongside everyday groceries, Carrefour helps families plan efficiently, save time, and prepare with confidence. Parents can check off their back-to-school lists while replenishing household supplies, turning what is usually a stressful season into a smooth, manageable, and even enjoyable experience.

For many parents, this makes a tangible difference. Sarah Namusoke, a mother of five, shares the shift she’s experienced:

“Back-to-school shopping used to overwhelm me. I was always stressed about time and money, and I would still have to rush to restock food for the house. But this year feels different. With the extra days and Carrefour’s back-to-school discounts, I can plan properly. I’m calmer, and my children feel that calm too.”

Fathers, too, echo this relief. John Okello, a father of three, explains:

“Preparing for school isn’t just about buying supplies. It’s about starting the term feeling organised and confident. When everything is sorted books, bags, and food at home, the whole family settles into the new routine more easily. Carrefour makes that possible in one place.”

As the new term approaches, Carrefour’s Back to School initiative reflects a deeper understanding of family life during this busy season. By combining great value across school essentials and everyday groceries, the campaign turns what is typically a stressful period into one of preparedness, confidence, and peace of mind.

For students, it means starting the year equipped and ready to learn. For parents and guardians, it’s a reminder that when preparation is made easier and more holistic, the journey into a new school year can feel less like a scramble and more like a fresh, hopeful beginning.
