KAMPALA METROPOLITAN (UGNEWSLINE) – At least two people have died and property has been damaged following heavy rains that pounded parts of the Kampala Metropolitan Area on Sunday, October 11, 2026, prompting police to warn the public against flood-related dangers.
The fatalities were reported in Bulabira Zone and Ttuba Zone in separate incidents linked to the overnight downpour, according to police.
In Bulabira Zone, police recovered the body of an unidentified man, estimated to be between 22 and 28 years old, from a drainage trench.
Preliminary information indicates that he may have been swept into the trench by floodwater.
In a separate incident in Ttuba Zone, Kyanja Parish, 25-year-old Jalia Nameere died after a perimeter wall reportedly collapsed onto her rented room during the heavy rains.
The bodies were taken to the mortuary for postmortem examinations as police began investigating the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
Police spokesperson Rusoke Kituuma said investigations into the incidents were ongoing, while appealing to members of the public who may have lost a relative matching the description of the unidentified man to contact Najjera Police Station for assistance.
The heavy rains also left a trail of property damage in other parts of the metropolitan area.
In Kiganda Zone, Kireka, police recovered a red TVS motorcycle, registration number UFG 529A, from floodwater. Meanwhile, in Mbalwa, floodwater destroyed a perimeter wall belonging to Mark Lwanga and damaged his Toyota Sienta, registration number UBH 630P.
Police officers visited the affected scenes and documented the incidents as inquiries continued.
In a public safety advisory, police urged residents to avoid flooded roads, drainage channels and trenches, warning against walking or driving through fast-flowing water.
The public was also cautioned to keep away from unstable walls and buildings, particularly during periods of heavy rainfall.
Property owners were further encouraged to inspect their structures for signs of weakness to prevent possible collapses and loss of life.
The incidents highlight the dangers posed by heavy rains and flooding in urban areas, where drainage channels, weakened structures and rising water levels can quickly turn severe weather into a deadly threat.
