Stakeholders in the education sector have been challenged to take joint responsibility for the upbringing of children by providing parental guidance and support that can help nurture them into responsible future leaders.

The call was made on September 14, 2026, by the headmistress of Lohana Academy Kampala, Phiona Akankunda, while speaking to the media about the turnout of pupils on the first day of the third term of the academic year.

Akankunda said the school recorded a 50 per cent turnout on the first day, out of a total population of about 900 learners. She attributed the absence of some pupils to various challenges affecting individual families.

She commended the directors of Lohana Academy schools for providing the necessary technical infrastructure, which she said had enabled the schools to deliver quality education to learners.

“We strongly appreciate the financial and technical support offered to our human resource personnel by the top management team, including both teaching and non-teaching staff. This has empowered them to combine their professional skills and abilities in driving the education transformation journey of our young learners,” Akankunda said.

She said the school’s Primary Leaving Examinations (PLE) candidate class, comprising 87 pupils, was well prepared for the final examinations.

According to Akankunda, teachers have completed the syllabus and are currently engaging the candidates in revision exercises and counselling, with particular attention to key subjects.

She encouraged the candidates to put their trust in Almighty God, whom she described as merciful and a source of wisdom, as they prepare for the examinations.

Akankunda also urged parents with outstanding school-related issues to visit the school administration and seek amicable solutions to avoid unnecessary tensions.

She further appreciated the technical capacity-building programmes provided by the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) and the Ministry of Education and Sports, saying they had strengthened teachers’ professional skills and improved their practical performance.
