The Makerere Lung Institute (MLI) has celebrated a decade of dedicated service to humanity and launched a fundraising drive to support its expansion programme, which aims to transform the institute into the leading lung centre of excellence on the African continent.
The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Health, Dr. Diana Atwine, who was the chief guest, congratulated MLI and its stakeholders for reaching this significant milestone. She noted that the Ministry and the Government would soon sign a Memorandum of Understanding with MLI to foster cooperation and strengthen its capacity to serve more patients with lung-related complications, as well as to promote research, innovation, human resource training, and infrastructure development, among other key services.
Emmanuel Kansiime Muntu, the MLI Finance Manager, said the MLI Expansion Project (MEP) is valued at UGX 66.84Bn (US$18.06M). The project comprises the construction of a 5,139 sqm building valued at US$14.04M, specialist training worth US$1.43M, and equipment valued at US$2.59M.
The new facility will be located on Mulago Hill on land allocated by the Mulago National Referral Hospital (MNRH) Board of Directors, a gesture that stakeholders deeply appreciated.
The Expansion Project
A major highlight of the anniversary was the unveiling of the landmark MLI Expansion Project (MEP), a six-level facility that will house the Centre for Advanced Pulmonary and Intensive Care (CAPIC) among other specialised units.
