The Pakistan High Commissioner to Uganda, His Excellency Muhammad Hassan Wazir, has officially launched a week-long free cataract surgery health camp, urging both Ugandan citizens and refugee communities residing in the country who are facing eye-related medical challenges to take advantage of the opportunity and seek treatment.
The High Commissioner made the remarks on 29 January 2026 while officiating at the opening ceremony of the camp, which will run from 29 January to 5 February 2026 at the Pakistan Free Eye Hospital in Ntinda, Nakawa Division.
The health camp has been organized by the Overseas Pakistan Global Foundation–Africa (OPGFA) in partnership with One Ummah, the Ministry of Health, and other key stakeholders.
During the ceremony, the High Commissioner thanked President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni and the Government of Uganda for the continued warm bilateral relations between the two sister countries. He noted that the strong diplomatic ties have fostered joint collaborations in various development sectors, including trade and health, benefiting thousands of Ugandans.
He also commended OPGFA President Iftikhar Sikandar Cheema and his Vice President Shahid Mahmood Alui for their instrumental role in mobilizing resources and logistical support to organize the multi-million-shilling free cataract surgery camp. He observed that millions of people in Uganda cannot afford the high cost of surgical eye care, making the initiative both timely and critical.
In their remarks, Mr. Cheema and Mr. Alui said the foundation is targeting to conduct free cataract surgeries for more than 10,000 people as a gesture of goodwill and appreciation for the cordial relationship OPGFA shares with Uganda.
They further noted that the organization conducts similar surgeries annually, providing hundreds of mainly underprivileged patients with free medical treatment, including medication and eyeglasses. Patients requiring complex procedures are referred to partner hospitals for specialized care.
The organizers encouraged patients of all ages and genders from across the country to visit the Pakistan Free Eye Hospital during the camp period, which ends on 5 February, and to continue seeking care at the facility whenever they experience future eye-related challenges.
