Nansana, Uganda – Learners and teachers at St. Joseph Nursery and Primary School in Nansana will now enjoy access to safe and clean drinking water, following the installation of a new water purification system donated through a partnership between Housing Finance Bank (HFB) and WaterQuip Uganda Limited.
The initiative forms part of Housing Finance Bank’s Water Supply and Sanitation Solution (WASS) program—an ongoing sustainability effort aimed at enhancing access to clean water, sanitation, and healthy learning environments in schools and communities across Uganda.
Promoting Health and Learning
Speaking during the handover ceremony, the Headmistress, Ms. Margret Nabakooza, highlighted the significance of clean water in promoting good health and academic success.
“Access to safe and clean water is essential for maintaining good health and preventing waterborne diseases among learners,” she said. “This donation will greatly benefit both our pupils and teachers by ensuring a healthier school environment.”
St. Joseph Nursery and Primary School, a government-aided institution, currently serves 918 pupils, 467 boys and 451 girls. The new purification system will provide safe drinking water for the entire school population and staff, while its 600-litre storage capacity ensures continued access even during power outages.
A Step Toward Sustainable Development
Many schools and communities in Uganda continue to struggle with inadequate access to safe water. According to HFB, these challenges contribute to preventable illnesses such as typhoid, malaria, and other hygiene-related diseases that hinder school attendance and performance.
Ms. Doreen Nyiramugisha, Head of Marketing and Communications at HFB, reaffirmed the Bank’s commitment to community development:
“At Housing Finance Bank, sustainability goes beyond financial inclusion—it’s about improving lives and enabling communities to thrive. Through this partnership, we are investing in long-term solutions that ensure every child has access to safe water, a clean environment, and the opportunity to learn with dignity.”
Collaboration for Greater Impact
Ms. Adrine Atumanya, CEO of WaterQuip Uganda Limited, emphasized the role of partnerships in achieving Uganda’s national and global development goals.
“Access to clean water is a fundamental human right,” she said. “By working with Housing Finance Bank, we are helping schools and communities access purified water through sustainable technology, directly contributing to UN Sustainable Development Goal 6—ensuring availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all.”
Building a Healthier, Sustainable Future
This project aligns with Housing Finance Bank’s broader sustainability strategy, which prioritizes environmental stewardship, community well-being, and inclusive growth. Through the WASS program, the Bank continues to promote hygiene education, environmentally conscious development, and equitable access to water and sanitation facilities nationwide.
By expanding these partnerships, Housing Finance Bank demonstrates its ongoing commitment to building a healthier, more sustainable Uganda—one where every child can learn, grow, and thrive in a safe and supportive environment.
